Cognitive Dimensions of Tangible Programming Languages
نویسنده
چکیده
We have in the past described several approaches to programming with tangible interfaces – both specific programming languages implemented in physical form, and physical interfaces (for example to domestic appliances) that have some programmable capabilities. In this paper, we investigate the more generic properties of tangible interfaces as a basis for programmable functionality. The specific target here is finding an application for a new technological approach to tangible interfaces in our lab – the use of radio frequency ID (RFID) tags. These also bring new constraints to the ways in which tangible user interfaces can be constructed.

Correlates of the cognitive dimensions for tangible user interface
We describe an application of the cognitive dimensions (CDs) of notations framework to tangible user interfaces (TUIs)—interaction with computers using physical devices other than mice and keyboards. We are particularly interested in situations where the TUI is used to construct some information structure (a manipulable solid diagram) and where that structure is intended to specify computer beh...
متن کاملThe Cognitive Dimensions of Music Notations
This paper presents and adapts the Cognitive Dimensions of Notations framework (Green and Petre, 1996) for use in designing and analysing notations (and user interfaces) in both digital and traditional music practice and study. Originally developed to research the psychology of programming languages, the framework has since found wider use in both general HCI and music. The paper provides an ov...
متن کاملSubsetability as a New Cognitive Dimension?
Subsetability is the ability to decompose programming languages and environments into a hierarchy of subsets, each of which can be used by students to create complete, meaningful computer programs. This paper argues that a programming language/environment's subsetability positively affects its learnability and teachability. The argument is supported by citing relevant theoretical research, litt...
متن کاملA Cognitive Dimensions Questionnaire Optimised for Users
The Cognitive Dimensions of Notations framework (CDs) provides a powerful vocabulary for discussing the usability of programming languages, tools and environments. Although originally proposed as a discussion tool for designers, they have recently been used to design questionnaires intended for system users evaluating the usability of the programming tools they use (Kadoda et al., 1999) We exte...

Steven Clarke and Curtis Becker Microsoft Corporation 41/2755 1 Microsoft Way Redmond WA 98052 [email protected] [email protected] Abstract In this paper we describe our attempts at using the Cognitive Dimensions framework to evaluate the usability of an object oriented (OO) application programming interface (API). The Cognitive Dimensions framework was originally designed as a tool to ...
